Artist Biography
Joseph Byrd was the driving force behind one of the most innovative psychedelic bands of the 1960s, the United States of America, who were among the first to combine rock and electronics. The U.S.A. made one great album and then disbanded, so Byrd recruited a new batch of musicians and started over as Joe Byrd & the Field Hippies. Starting from a similar musical template, Byrd expanded by adding somewhat Beatlesque orchestrations to the band’s only album, 1969’s THE AMERICAN METAPHYSICAL CIRCUS. The band, ultimately a studio creation, never performed live, and Byrd went on to album production, film scoring, electronic music, and academia.
