Artist Biography
German composer Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) is best known for his Canon in D, but he was one of the most significant organists in the years leading up to Johann Sebastian Bach. Born in Nuremburg, Pachelbel gained his first significant position in Vienna in 1673. Working in Eisenach brought Pachelbel into contact with the Bach family, and he kept in touch with them even after moving to Erfurt. There, an outbreak of plague took Pachelbel's own wife and son, leading to his publication Musicalische Sterbens-Gedancken (1683). Pachelbel's last years were spent in his native Nuremburg, where he published his Hexachordum Apollinis (1699).
