Assistant to Columbia Records chief Norrie Paramor, John Schroeder discovered the 14-year-old Helen Shapiro in 1961. When Paramor could find no suitable material for her, Schroeder wrote his first song and her first hit, "Please Don't Treat Me Like a Child." A subsequent song for Shapiro, "Walkin' Back to Happiness," won the Ivor Novello Award. He then spent two years as label manager for Oriole, before being appointed head of Pye Records' Piccadilly label. Alongside success with the Rockin' Berries and the Ivy League, Schroeder formed the instrumental group Sounds Orchestral with keyboard player Johnny Pearson. Schroeder and Pearson went on to record 17 Sounds Orchestral albums and, following the release of the spoof '60s film soundtrack The Dolly Catcher, he founded the City of Westminster String Band. ~ TiVo Staff
