Artist Biography
In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. Playing with my free jazz quartet in 1993 at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. We were on tour with Bill Frisell's group and for the first time I felt that real feeling that playing music was something that was important to people!
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Bobo Stenson, Jan Garbarek, Dansere Keith Jarrett, The Köln Concert (Live) Trygve Seim, Helsinki Songs Dansere was the first album where I heard Jan Garbarek play. The feel of that tune is unbeatable. Jarrett's solo work is still without equal. Helsinki Songs, by Trygve Seim, has a beautiful light and airy intelligence to it - really where I am too...
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Breaking the Waves” This song encapsulates my ideas of space and melodic improvisation. The tune has a stillness I really love, and the piano of John Law, bass of Nick Pini and drumming of Alex Goodyear sums up why I want to play this kind of music with them!
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? Discovering that Earth Songs is getting played around the world is a really significant deal. When people buy CDs at concerts that is a great feeling, but this is in some ways the bigger experience.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? The objective of a live band (which this is) is to play great concerts. We want to play more, continue to develop and then record new music. A simple yet really satisfying aim!
