Khuli Chana: Amaqhawe
The motswako pioneer and the tracks that inspire his creativity.
Artist Biography
Since emerging in the early 2000s, Khuli Chana has been an ambassador and a torchbearer of motswako, the South African hip-hop subgenre pioneered in his hometown of Mahikeng. Born Khulane Morule in 1982, Khuli got his professional start as a member of the trio Morafe, whose 2005 album, Maru a Pula (The Anticipation), introduced motswako's dynamic sound into the mainstream. He launched his solo career in 2010 with the release of the aptly titled, multiplatinum-selling Motswakoriginator. On 2012’s Lost in Time, Khuli was at the top of the game; by 2017’s One Source, he was attracting features from some of the continent’s most renowned artists, including Patoranking and Stonebwoy. With his commanding tongue-twisting rhymes that swiftly switch between English and his native language Setswana, Khuli is a top-tier lyricist and a bona fide mogul via his Mythrone Records imprint.
