Kim Cass is an American jazz double bassist and composer. His self-developed technique utilizes harmonics, idiosyncratic hand positions, and open strings. His darkish, round tone propels pizzicato and arco playing that ranges across the jazz tradition and spills over into vanguard improvisation, evident on his 2015 eponymous solo debut on Table & Chairs Music. That same year he joined saxophonist Noah Preminger's quartet on Pivot: Live at the 55 Bar, and has remained with him since, performing in studio and on the road. In addition to Preminger, he also records and performs with pianist Matt Mitchell, drummer/percussionist Kate Gentile, vibraphonist Patricia Brennan, the Frank Carlberg Large Ensemble, and vocalist Christine Correa, among others. In 2023, Cass joined drummer Jeff Cosgrove and saxophonist Preminger on the tri-billed digital set Confusing Motion for Progress. He followed in 2024 with his sophomore leader date, Levs, on Pi Recordings.
