Although inaugurated in December 1968, Leviathan evolved out of UK, Brighton-based pop unit, the Mike Stuart Span. Four singles had been completed under this early appellation before Stuart Hobday (vocals), Brian Bennett (guitar), Roger McCabe (bass) and Gary ‘Roscoe’ Murphy (drums) embarked on a progressive rock direction. Signed to Elektra Records, the renamed quartet’s first two singles were issued as a package in April 1969. Dubbed ‘The Four Faces Of Leviathan’, each song deliberately showed contrasting musical styles, but this ambitious idea failed to generate the anticipated enthusiasm. The band completed an entire album, but broke up when it was rejected by their label. Leviathan did return to the studio to record a final single, ‘Flames’, before finally disintegrating. Stuart Hobday went on to work as a respected freelance producer for BBC Radio.
