French group Lightwave's music encompasses cavernous ambient soundscapes, Berlin School-style kosmische, and electro-acoustic experimentation. Using modular synthesizers as well as digital effects, they create playful, expressive, semi-improvised compositions, joined by video sequences during concert and installation performances. They formed in 1985 and issued several cassettes before their first studio album, Nachtmusik, appeared in 1990. Core duo Christoph Harbonnier and Christian Wittman were joined by former Tangerine Dream member Paul Haslinger, who appeared on most of Lightwave's subsequent releases beginning with 1993's Tycho Brahé. Lightwave also appeared on several albums by composer Hector Zazou during the early '90s. Since the release of 2004's Bleue Comme une Orange, Lightwave has occasionally performed or released compositions such as "Les baladins du vide" (2020). One of their early cassettes, Cités Analogues, was reissued for the first time in 2025.
