British Iraqi rapper, writer, and political activist Kareem “Lowkey” Dennis makes music to champion marginalized communities and promote social change.
• Dennis began his career as an open mic performer at the legendary London record shop Deal Real. In 2003, he delivered his debut mixtape as Lowkey, Key to the Game Volume 1.
• By the mid-2000s, he had become a member of the hip-hop group Poisonous Poets. They released their first and only record in 2005.
• In 2008, after a brief hiatus, Lowkey released his debut album, Dear Listener. He also joined Jon McClure of Reverend and the Makers, Matt Helders and Andy Nicholson of Arctic Monkeys, and Drew McConnell of Babyshambles to form the genre-fusion supergroup Mongrel. Their only album, Better Than Heavy, arrived the following year.
• Lowkey spent the late 2000s traveling to the West Bank, offering medical aid, performing shows, and organizing music workshops for Palestinians in refugee camps.
• Highlighted by the political hit single “Voices of the Voiceless,” featuring Immortal Technique, Lowkey’s 2011 album Soundtrack to the Struggle hit the Top 10 on the UK R&B chart.
• In 2012, Lowkey took another hiatus to focus on getting his master’s degree in Near and Middle Eastern studies from the SOAS University of London.
• Lowkey’s 2019 album Soundtrack to the Struggle 2 hit No. 2 on the UK R&B chart.
