Canadian singer/songwriter Luca Fogale’s candid indie folk has an intimacy and immediacy that’s as comforting and cathartic as a late-night heart-to-heart with a close friend. For Fogale, writing music started out as more of a necessity than a passion. After quitting his studies at Vancouver’s University of British Columbia, he began writing songs on piano and guitar—two instruments he’d been casually playing—after realizing it was an outlet he desperately craved. This visceral need courses through his music, which came fully realized on his 2016 debut album, Safety. Evoking the haunting acoustic poignancy of Bon Iver with streaks of soul and blues, Fogale’s soft-spoken yet hard-hitting revelations proved an ideal fit for TV soundtracks including Grey’s Anatomy and tour partners like Dermot Kennedy. Still, as his audience grows, he’s been in no hurry to force his songwriting for anyone else. After a four-year wait, Fogale returned with the lush and atmospheric Nothing is Lost, in which his hushed, slightly frayed vocals hold nothing back as he meditates on losing faith and finding himself in the process.
