About Lychgate
London-based metal band Lychgate subverts expectations, from its unexpected sonic maelstrom (mixing keyboard and even organ textures into its fast-paced but not skull-splitting songs) to its surprising inspiration from vintage dystopian literature and art. After the raw punishment of their self-titled debut in 2013, the group struck a nerve with 2015's An Antidote for the Glass Pill, an album conceptually inspired by philosopher Jeremy Bentham and his theoretical prison system, the Panopticon. Follow-up The Contagion in Nine Steps (2018), a more measured affair, took after the Stanislaw Lem novel The Invisible, noted for its ideas on swarm intelligence. The 2020 EP Also Sprach Futura took cues from ideas in the groundbreaking film Metropolis, while 2025's Precipice is based on E.M. Forster's "The Machine Stops," considered one of the most groundbreaking technological dystopian stories of all time.
