About Mari Kalkun
An Estonian musician deeply rooted in the folk traditions and landscapes of her native Võrumaa County, Mari Kalkun's music is poetic, graceful, and emotionally resonant. Accompanying herself on piano and kannel (a type of Estonian zither), she released a pair of albums, 2007's Üü tulõk and 2010's Vihmakõnõ, which helped her gain international recognition, especially in Japan, where she has maintained an audience. Kalkun continued to sing in her native Võro language, releasing acclaimed albums like Upa-upa ubinakõnõ (2015), Ilmamõtsan (2017), and the unique, home-recorded Õunaaia Album (2020). She signed with Real World Records ahead of her 2023 album Stories of Stonia which received a live companion release in 2025.
