Born
March 14, 1932
Genre
Jazz
By his mid-teens, Mark Murphy was performing with a band led by his brother in Syracuse. However, he eventually built a reputation as a bop-oriented singer in New York, releasing a series of acclaimed albums in the late-'50s. During the '60s, Murphy toured Europe and collaborated with saxophonist Al Cohn on THAT'S HOW I LOVE THE BLUES, and, in the early-'70s, recorded BRIDGING A GAP with Michael and Randy Brecker. In the early-'90s, his version of "Milestones" became something of a touchstone for the acid-jazz movement, and led to collaborations with United Future Organization, 4 Hero, and Till Bronner. He was nominated for a Grammy for 1997’s vocalese outing SONG FOR THE GEESE.
