Billed as somewhat of a supergroup, Mastersystem were founded by members of Frightened Rabbit, Minor Victories, and Editors in 2016. Scott Hutchinson and his brother Grant of Frightened Rabbit met Editors' Justin Lockey and his brother and Minor Victories bandmate James in Berlin, where the side-project was born. Given their commitments to their respective bands, it would be a further two years until the collective released any material. Eventually, in 2018, Mastersystem announced their debut record with the release of the lead single "Notes on a Life Not Quite Lived." Later that year the band put out their inaugural long-player Dance Music, which tipped its cap to the fuzzed-up grunge of the '90s. The quartet toured the album in 2018 with a string of U.K. dates. ~ Bekki Bemrose
