Albums by Matt Wilson
Artist Biography
Initially influenced by Buddy Rich and drummers with the big bands of Duke Ellington and Count Basie, in his teens Matt Wilson discovered the advanced drumming of Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Billy Higgins, and Ed Blackwell. After studying at Wichita State University, Wilson moved to Boston in 1974, where he performed with artists such as Charlie Kohlhase, Dominique Eade, and Either/Orchestra. A short but influential stint with Woody Herman added to his increasing resume. In 1992 Wilson moved to New York where he was sought out for session work by Dewey Redman, Lee Konitz, and Fred Hersch. He also began his solo career in earnest, recording several impressive albums for Palmetto Records, including SMILE (1999) and WAKE UP (TO WHAT'S HAPPENING) (2004).
