About Jason Moran
Pianist Jason Moran is an innovative artist who balances impeccable technique with influences drawn from jazz, classical, blues, funk, hip-hop, rock, and the art world. Following a partnership with Greg Osby, he garnered critical acclaim for his 1999 debut, Soundtrack to Human Motion. Both 2000's Facing Left and 2002's Modernistic featured a dazzling array of tunes from a wide range of sources like boogie woogie, classical, avant-jazz, and funk. Moran re-examined the blues tradition on 2006's Artist in Residence, and 2010's Ten led to a MacArthur Foundation Genius grant. He later composed the score for Ava DuVernay's landmark 2014 film Selma. Along with his Toni Morrison-inspired 2021 solo outing The Sound Will Tell You, he also celebrated the life and legacy of Black composer James Reese Europe on From the Dancehall to the Battlefield, before collaborating with drummer Marcus Gilmore and electronic musician BlankFor.ms on 2023's Refract and 2026's Shards.
