A founding member of the art rock band Genesis, Mike Rutherford has also made excursions into solo projects and, most notably, the pop combo Mike + the Mechanics. After garnering a cult following for their complex, theatrical approach under leader Peter Gabriel, Genesis went in a more concise, pop-oriented direction under drummer/vocalist Phil Collins that resulted in mainstream successes like 1981's Abacab and the 1986 blockbuster Invisible Touch. Meanwhile, Rutherford issued his first solo effort, 1980's Smallcreep's Day, followed in 1982 by Acting Very Strange. In 1985, he formed Mike + the Mechanics, featuring former Squeeze member Paul Carrack. Their eponymous debut yielded the Top Ten smashes "Silent Running" and "All I Need Is a Miracle." The title track to 1988's The Living Years went to number one. Rutherford's '90s output included the Mechanics' Beggar on a Beach of Gold and a Collins-less Genesis LP, 1997's Calling All Stations.
