South African singer/songwriter Mthandazo Gatya kills it with kindness. On his 2020 Xhosa-language breakthrough track, "Senzeni (What Have We Done?),” Gatya delivers a powerful dose of thumping maskandi that celebrates the spirit of unity, positivity, and, especially, ubuntu, or kindness. Born in 1991 and raised in the southern Joburg township of Weilers Farm, Gatya began his singing career in the school choir. In 2010, he won second prize on Jam Alley, a popular TV launching pad for musicians. While Gatya’s soulful voice provides an optimistic lyrical focus on tracks like "Believe" and "Hallelujah," collaborators DJ Manzo SA and Comado bring the dance beats that make his EP Umonde (Patience) a perfect blend of form and content.
