Artist Biography
Music A.M. is the creation of Luke Sutherland, one of the UK’s great ‘lost’ voices and lyricists of the 90s. Sutherland is now probably best known as a Whitbread Prize nominated novelist and a sometime contributor to Mogwai but his greatest moves have actually been in his own bands/projects, Long Fin Killie and Bows. Aided and abetted by Stefan Schneider (To Rococo Rot, Mapstation) and Volker Bertelmann (Tontraeger) under the Music A.M. moniker, Sutherland creates a admirably restrained electronica or data-pop that is beguiling and lovely, wistful and anaesthetized. On the trio’s 2004 debut, A Heart & Two Stars, the themes of sexuality, gender and machismo recur from Sutherland’s previous projects. One of the album’s most touching songs was a bizarre glimpse into the life of a cartoon baddy and ‘weekend wrestler’ known as Blackflash, a caped and masked character who always loses, the pay-off for which is a love of being hated. The release of A Heart & Two Stars coincided with the publication of Sutherland’s third novel, Venus As A Boy. Despite wide acclaim for his novel writing, however, Sutherland asserted music and songwriting as his greatest vocation.
