About Nico Junior
b. 1975, Jones Town, Jamaica, West Indies. Nico moved to the UK with his family in 1989 and became involved in the local dancehall scene. His initial experience at the microphone was on the south London-based Papa Love sound system. He performed on a variety of sounds alongside many of the UK’s top performers, including Mike Anthony, Top Cat and the star of We The Raggamuffin, Bucky Ranks. In 1993 he recorded his debut, ‘Can’t Butterfly’, a well-received comment on the then current dance craze. His successful debut led to a duet with Jack Radics, ‘Woman You Safe And Secure’, and the braggadocio ‘Yo Yo Baby’. Following his initial run of hits, he joined the Fashion Records posse, where he recorded the emotional ‘Garnett Silk Tribute’, alongside ‘Salute’ and ‘Defend The Money’. His success through Fashion led to sessions with a number of producers in the UK, including Lloyd ‘Musclehead’ Francis and Dennis Rowe for the stylish ‘Dapper’, while with Top Cat he scored with ‘Cantona’, and with Daddy Noddy, ‘Born Lucky’. The hits, including the favoured ‘Heartbeat’, continued, but it was the Delroy Clarke and Paul ‘Commander B’ Blake-produced ‘Cartoon Party’, in 1998, that led to wider recognition. The success of the tune led to the popular DJ Glamma Kid (who was also recording with the prolific duo of Clarkie And Blakie) claiming that Junior had gone ‘Loonie Tunie’, maintaining the popular rivalry that has elevated the careers of many DJs. Junior maintained his profile when he recorded with the UK-based singer and producer, Slim Batson, for his interpretation of ‘No No No’.
