Producer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Laura Kidd had been active in the music scene since 2009, originally as She Makes War, before putting that project to bed in 2020. Reinventing herself as Penfriend, she drew musical influences from her past while dealing with the ills that come from modern-day living on her 2021 debut album Exotic Monsters.
