London noise rock trio Parakeet formed in 2011 as a side project for members of like-minded bands Yuck and the History of Apple Pie. Mariko Doi from Yuck took the role of lead vocalist and bassist, James Thomas from the History of Apple Pie played drums, and the two songwriters rounded out the trio with guitarist Jon Jackson, formerly of the lesser-known Loverman. The band's songs were in a similar '90s-steeped, fuzz-heavy vein as Yuck's, but with less guitar mutilation and more focus on candy-coated pop melodies and friendly hooks. In early 2012 their songs began to appear online, with the Tomorrow 7" following in April. An EP entitled Shonen Hearts appeared later in the year, available first as a limited-edition cassette. ~ Fred Thomas
