About Philip Amalong, pianist
Artist Biography
In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. At age four, staring at mom's music book for the Bach 2-Part Inventions, especially the Bb major invention - being fascinated by the shapes of the lines and notes on the page, and wondering how they could unlock something that sounded so wonderful.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Bill Evans, Greatest Bill Evans Emil Gilels, Vladimir Horowitz, Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 3, Vladimir Horowitz vs. Emil Gilels (Compare 2 Versions) Keane, The Best of Keane I'd hide away in the library when I was 12 at summer camp, and listen to Horowitz playing Rachmaninoff Concerto #3. I was forever enchanted. Keane - the purest pop ever, and Tom's voice is a treasure. Bill Evans - what can I say. Pure magic.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “Rorem: Toccata” This piece by Ned Rorem is ingeniously crafted around a melodic and rhythmic motive that runs throughout. It explores the limits of the range of the piano, and is both emotive and percussive, while always moving forward with its relentless rhythm.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? Playing for school children while on tour in England. They gathered around the piano and were just giddy about the glissandi in the Liszt's 10th Hungarian Rhapsody, especially since my finger started to bleed, sending blood splatter across the keys.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? To record every piano toccata composed since 1900.
