The ultimate lounge or bar band, Querschläger (which means "ricochet") was formed for kicks in 1990 in Salzburg, Austria. They incorporate many styles into their repertoire like R&B, blues, jazz, folk, rock and worldbeat. But unlike the stereotypical lounge act that relies on kitschy pop hits and hackneyed AOR staples Querschläger performs almost all original tunes penned by lead singer Fritz Messner. As their popularity soared to regional cult status outside record label interest increased too. Unwilling to abandon the unusual mountain dialect of the Lungau and refusing to "tame" their lyrics invariably renders them "unmarketable" in the minds of oportunistic label executives thus full artistic and business control (recording, production, artwork, promotions) remains in the hands of Querschläger...which is their preference. While their reputation is that of a zany, party band, amid the quirkiness of each of their three albums lies several well crafted songs, impressive vocal harmonies and creative arrangements often embracing uncustomary instruments like contrabass clarinet, dudelsack and ocarina courtesy of wind specialist Fritz Kronthaler. Guitarist Mathias Messner frequently displays accomplished playing particularly on acoustic guitar, percussionist Thomas Binderberger is well equipped to handle African, Latin, Jamaican or whatever rhythm is required at the moment and keyboardist/accordion player Franz Tannenberger tastfully embellishes folk, rock or pop songs with his cohesive and complimentary style. ~ Dave Sleger
