Nigerian rapper and singer-songwriter Rema—born Divine Ikubor—began his career with a series of viral freestyles, and signed with Mavin Records in 2019, the same year as his first hit “Dumebi” from his self-titled debut EP. “Iron Man,” another track off of Rema, also earned a place on President Barack Obama’s 2019 summer playlist. Following up with a series of singles and EPs, Rema then released his first full-length, 2022’s Rave & Roses. The album featured “Calm Down,” which went on to top charts in several countries, while its Selena Gomez-featuring remix became the then-biggest Afrobeats crossover hit in history. He launched his second album HEIS in 2024, and continued to release singles like “Baby (Is it a Crime)” and “Bout U” into the next year, consistently bringing a distinct voice to the evolving sound of Afrobeat.
