Rapper Roddy Ricch learned early on that the strongest person in the room is usually the quietest. Born Rodrick Moore in 1998 in Compton, California, Ricch started releasing mixtapes in 2017 and quickly became one of the most salient young voices in rap, developing an understated but no-nonsense style that not only earned him credibility but popularity. Though he reps Compton, Ricch’s style isn’t bound by region, mixing melodic trap and groggy Auto-Tune with the steely disposition of drill and a laidback stoicism long associated with the West Coast. Alongside artists like North Carolina’s DaBaby and the Bronx’s A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Ricch also represents a wave of rappers whose boasts are offset by a sense of humility that feels honest without being dramatic or self-effacing. After releasing his proper debut album with 2019’s Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial, which won Top Album of the Year at the Apple Music Awards, Ricch tapped top-tier guests like Jamie Foxx, 21 Savage, Future, and Kodak Black for 2021’s LIVE LIFE FAST. His 2025 album THE NAVY ALBUM charts newfound maturity in both sound and content, with player/producer Terrace Martin contributing some jazz flourishes as Ricch documents his personal experience with more honesty than ever. “[I’m] tryin’ to just give it everything I got and be as vulnerable as I can to my fans, allowing them into my life,” he told Apple Music. “They’re gonna get a real experience, almost like a soundtrack [or] movie experience of what my life is like.”
