Artist Biography
Tenor, soprano sax, piano. Roland Alexander had both formal training and widespread experience. He earned a bachelor's degree in music from Boston Conservatory and moved to New York City in 1958. Alexander worked with many jazz mainstays, including John Coltrane, Max Roach, Sonny Rollins and Roy Haynes. His style, though rooted in bop, expanded to freer, more experimental works in the '60s and '70s. The 1978 Live at the Axis with Malachi Thompson and Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre represents his most adventurous release as a leader. Alexander passed away in 2006. ~ Ron Wynn
