Artist Biography
With roots stretching all the way back to 1986, Baltimore's Revelation are charter members of the state of Maryland's renowned doom metal fraternity, also including the likes of Iron Man, Unorthodox, Internal Void, and, before them all, the Obsessed. As such, Revelation's early career was also largely confined to underground awareness and a relationship with the Hellhound label (Rise Above in England), which recognized the promise in their late-‘80s demos and released their debut album, Salvation's Answer, in 1991. Along with its like-styled successor, 1992's Never Comes Silence, the album showcased a particularly sullen, snail-paced, but relatively melodic approach to the genre -- a purist's approach, if you will -- executed by vocalist and guitarist John Brenner, bassist Josh Hart, and drummer Steve Branagan. But when the first two decided to leave the group shortly thereafter, it was left to Branagan to forge ahead by recruiting vocalist/guitarist Dennis Cornelius and bassist Jim Hunter, who brought a more energetic songwriting style to Revelation's third full-length, 1995's …Yet So Far, earning positive reviews and leading to a European tour in support of Saint Vitus. This small taste of prosperity wasn't enough to keep Revelation together, however, and the ensuing decade would see only sporadic reunion shows, demo recordings, and a pair of retrospective releases amid long bouts of inactivity. Finally, with the return of founding member John Brenner and onetime bassist Bert Hall, Jr. (both of whom had already reunited with Branagan in another band called Against Nature), Revelation recorded their fourth studio album, Release, in 2008, and, hot on its heels, 2009's For the Sake of No One. A "lost" eponymous album dating back to 1988 was also unearthed and issued around this time, joining its new-millennium siblings in harking back to Revelation's early-days doom style, and leading to a series of subsequent reissues through Shadow Kingdom Records. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
