In many ways, Staffordshire, England's rather obviously named Steel epitomized the basic New Wave of British Heavy Metal blueprint, with their typically raw but far from rudimentary style comparable to scene contemporaries such as Blitzkrieg, Trespass, and even early Iron Maiden, to be quite honest. Originating in 1980, from a mixture of '70s hard rock veterans (vocalist Paul Tunnecliffe, drummer Simon Atkins) and heavy metal-minded newcomers (guitarists Dave Brookes and Paul Roe, bassist Stefan Cartwright), the group was quickly signed by Neat Records, and released its first single, "Rock Out" (b/w "All Systems Go"), the following year. This proved a mixed affair, however, with the A-side being overly reliant on Kiss (and "Detroit Rock City," in particular) for its almost moronically straightforward hard rock, while the B-side easily outgunned it thanks to a far more vigorous assault descended from the Judas Priest/Motörhead school of thought. As it turned out, neither was strong enough to warrant a full album deal from Neat, though, and, after a few more years of self-recorded demos and fruitless work on the U.K. club circuit, Steel joined dozens of other secondary and tertiary N.W.O.B.H.M. acts in the realm of unfulfilled expectations. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
