In the mid-1980s, frontwoman Marcy Mays, bassist Sue Harshe, and drummer Carolyn O’Leary emerged of Columbus Ohio the pioneering all-female trio Scrawl. Their sound was equal parts Young Marble Giants avant-amateurs and a more assured proto-indie pop that would influence the riot grrrl movement as well as solo artists like Liz Phair. Scrawl did have their share of major-label spotlight, but it took at least a decade to get there. They would disband a couple of years after their Elektra debut in the late ’90s. In the intervening years, they released a rough-around-the-edges debut, PLUS, ALSO, TOO, before signing to the Rough Trade label for two albums which were produced by Steve Albini. After Rough Trade folded, they moved to the Simple Machines imprint for 1993’s Velvet Hammer before the jump to Elektra for 1996’s TRAVEL ON, RIDER and their final album, 1998’s NATURE FILM.
