Though the Austrian duo Seiler und Speer have insisted at various points in their career that they don’t take themselves seriously, the pair have made a serious impact on the charts since pivoting from short films and comedy toward music. In 2015, they released the local chart-topper “Ham kummst,” their first of more than a dozen Top 40 singles in Austria.
Christopher Seiler (born in 1987) and Bernhard Speer (born in 1993) formed in the lower Austrian town of Bad Vöslau. Seiler had already made some headway as an actor and comedian, while Speer was making inroads as a producer and director. They collaborated in 2013 on a pair of YouTube series created by Seiler: Schichtwechsel, a satirical slice-of-Austrian-life anthology, and Horvathslos, a viral success that saw Seiler portray Anton Horvath, a self-obsessed drunk whose mishaps are captured by a documentarian played by Speer.
During filming, the duo devised ideas for original songs that would be featured in their shorts; when Seiler came to a shoot one day with a guitar to lend to someone else, he and Speer ended up really writing, infusing their simple songs with lyrics also focusing on local culture and misadventures that listeners could identify with. In 2015, they released their debut Ham kummst, featuring the title track about men who disappoint their spouses after nights of hard drinking. Against all odds, both the song and album topped the Austrian charts, and the duo won Amadeus Awards (the country’s highest musical honor) for Songwriter and Song of the Year.
What was meant to be a lark became a viable second career for the performers. 2017’s Und weida? was another number one album, featuring the Top Five hit “I kenn di vo wo.” After putting the project on pause briefly as Speer recovered from injuries suffered in a van crash while on tour, 2019’s Für immer followed its predecessors to top the charts, aided by the number two smash “Ala bin” and fan favorites “Herr Inspektor” and “Principessa.” After sitting out the COVID-19 pandemic as a duo (Speer released several singles under the name Herr Speer), Seiler & Speer released a live album, Red Bull Symphonic, and followed it with the sonically diverse Hödn in 2025. ~ Mike Duquette
