Artist Biography
Known as The King of African Dancehall, Shatta Wale was already one of Ghana’s most decorated artists before a collaboration with Beyoncé introduced him to a global audience.
∙ His 2004 single “Moko Hoo” (released under the name Bandana), featured popular rapper Tinny and earned Wale his first of three-dozen nominations at the Ghana Music Awards.
∙ “Dancehall King,” his 2014 breakthrough hit, won him several accolades, including Best New Entertainer honors at the International Reggae & World Music Awards.
∙ Anchored by the single “Gringo”—a No. 1 hit on iTunes in Ghana—2018’s Reign reached the Top 10 of Billboard’s World Albums chart.
∙ Beyoncé tapped him to perform on “ALREADY,” from 2019’s Grammy-nominated The Lion King: The Gift, and to appear in the acclaimed film Black Is King, which accompanied the album.
∙ Wale headlined the 2020 compilation Tropical House Cruises to Jamaica the Reggae Collector’s Edition, the first-ever reggae album to top the iTunes chart in Ghana.
