Shenandoah was one of country musicâs biggest acts in the â90s, skipping the decadeâs pop crossover boom in favor of a more traditional sound rooted in bluegrass, gospel, and honky-tonk.
â Their 1989 breakout, The Road Not Taken, scored three No. 1s on Billboardâs Hot Country chart: âThe Church On Cumberland Road,â âSunday in the South,â and âTwo Dozen Roses.â
â Their biggest hit, âNext to You, Next to Me,â from 1990âs Gold-certified Extra Mile, earned the band Vocal Group of the Year honors from the Academy of Country Music Awards.
â The lyrics for 1993âs chart-topping crowd-pleaser âIf Bubba Can Dance (I Can Too),â from Under the Kudzu, were inspired by a commercial that they saw for a line-dancing instructional video.
â Both âDarned If I Donât (Danged If I Do)â and the title track of 1994âs In the Vicinity of the Heart scored Grammy nominations, with the latterâa duet with Alison Kraussâwinning a trophy.
â Frontman Marty Raybon and his brother Tim landed in the Top 40 of both the Country and Pop charts in 1997 with a cover of Bob Carlisleâs contemporary Christian hit âButterfly Kisses.â
â Miranda Lambert called them an inspiration, and Marty Raybon duetted with her on âAnother Sunday in the South,â a tribute to Shenandoah on her Grammy-winning 2014 LP, Platinum.
Members of Shenandoah include, or have included, Jimmy Yeary, Curtis Wright, Marty Raybon, Mike McGuire, Brent Lamb, and Stan Thorn.
