Artist Biography
For Christians throughout South Africa, the name Solly Moholo is synonymous with Mokhukhu gospel music. Born Solomon Molokoane in Soshanguve, just north of Pretoria, the vocalist first achieved success in the early 2000s with an endearing sound, look, and style of dance all inspired by the khaki-uniformed Mokhukhu singers long associated with the Zion Christian Church (the largest African Indigenous church in the nation). Popular favorites like “Ba Mmitsa Tsotsi” and “Moruti Nthapelele,” released in 2001 and 2018 respectively, attest to the power of spiritual music as a force for healing and celebration, as Moholo blends his warm and rich intonation with traditional rhythms and backing choir voices that skip like pebbles across the surface of a pond. It’s a playfulness that extends to Moholo’s public persona—he is a truly charismatic entertainer who, in addition to dropping more than 20 albums and selling out concerts across South Africa, has popped up in viral videos and television programs, showing off his signature dance moves.
