About Spunicunifait
Spunicunifait is a string quintet whose name is a nonsense word invented by Mozart in a letter to his cousin Maria Anna Thekla, perhaps meant as an inside joke in reference to a piece of clothing she donned in a self-portrait. The quintet was drawn to the name to honor the creativity and silliness that went hand in hand in Mozart's personality. All part of leading chamber and orchestral ensembles in Europe, the five members came together with the specific goal of recording Mozart's complete string quintets on historical instruments. The members are Lorenza Borrani and Maia Cabeza (violins), Max Mandel and Simone von Rahden (violas), and Luise Buchberger (cello). Spunicunifait's album, Mozart: Six String Quintets on Historical Instruments, was released in 2025.
