With his rootsy rock ‘n’ roll - considered by many to be a Scandinavian version of Bruce Springsteen - Swedish singer Stefan Andersson made a huge impact in his native country with the 1992 release of Emperor’s Day. Andersson claims his musical approach is most heavily influenced by the cassettes his mother played to him as a child - principally comprising Elvis Presley and the Beatles. Indeed, his first band was a Beatles cover group, but over several years he was unable to write a hit single in this format. His solo career began with the usual round of rejections from major record labels (who suggested he write more Swedish-language material), before he teamed up with producer Lars Andersson (no relation) at Record Station Records. He found immediate success. His debut album sold over 150, 000 copies (achieving platinum status in Sweden) while the attendant single, ‘Catch The Moon’, stayed at number 1 in the Swedish charts for a month. Later he was presented with a Grammy award for Emperor’s Day, and a hugely successful live tour followed. In 1993 he entered the studio to record Walk Right On, an impressive follow-up set that returned him to the top of the charts.
Stefan Andersson has also released music as a member of Andersson & Gibson.
