About Stephen Schwartz
One of the most successful Broadway and film composer/lyricists of his generation, Stephen Schwartz is recognized for his soaring melodies and insightful, character-driven lyrics. After making his off-Broadway debut in 1971 with Godspell -- which took home the Grammy for best score from a cast album -- he went on to write the music and lyrics for such stage and screen blockbusters as Pippin (1972), Disney's Pocahontas (1995), DreamWorks' The Prince of Egypt (1998), and Broadway's Wicked (2003). He has collected three Academy Awards along the way, for Pocahontas' score and Best Original Song "Colors of the Wind," both with Alan Menken, and for "When You Believe" from The Prince of Egypt. He and Menken had three songs from Disney's Enchanted (2007) nominated for the best song Oscar. Schwartz's ninth Oscar nomination came for his ambitious score (with John Powell) for the big-screen adaptation of Wicked (2024).
