Steve Stapleton is best known as the enigmatic man behind the experimental group Nurse with Wound. Although the band, formed in 1978, was often lumped in with the industrial scene at the time, their list of influences showed a much broader range of artistic sources, from the more experimental side of free jazz, progressive and psychedelic rock to outsider music and modern classical. By the early '80s, NwW became Stapleton's solo project. Meanwhile, he worked collaboratively with artists like John Balance of Coil, Stereolab, and Organum, among others. After David Tibet departed Psychic TV to form Current 93, Stapleton was added, providing the more experimental elements to Tibet's music. In 1991, they released The Sadness of Things under their own names. Besides NwW's prolific output and his work with Current 93, Stapleton is in the ambient Aeolian String Ensemble, and in 1995 he debuted his group the Inflatable Sideshow.
