Suresh Wadkar has graced film soundtracks in Bollywood, Marathi and other languages since the â70s, while devotional recordings have elevated the singerâs deeply emotive vocals to new heights.
⢠Wadkarâs talent was shaped by Indian classical guru Jialal Vasant. His influences include revered playback singer Lata Mangeshkarâwith whom he would record several duets and proved instrumental in his career.
⢠Wadkarâs breakthrough as playback singer was âBrishti Pade Tapur Tuparâ, a romantic duet with Hemlata from 1977 Bollywood film Paheli.
⢠His gift for melody stood out on an array of soundtracks across subsequent decades. Heâs earned Filmfare Award nominations for Best Male Playback Singer for 1982âs Prem Rog, 1986âs Ram Teri Ganga Maili, 1989âs Chadni and 1990âs Dil.
⢠In 2010, Wadkar won Best Male Playback Singer at the National Film Awards for his soulful contribution to the Marathi biopic of activist Sindhutai Sapkal, Mee Sindhutai Sapkal.
⢠He has increasingly focused on devotional music, recording a multitude of mantras, bhajans, aartis and more.
⢠Placing a high value on passing on the artistic torch, he shares expertise with students around the world via Suresh Wadkarâs Ajivasan Music Academy.
⢠The Indian government honoured Wadkar with a Padma Shri Award for distinguished service in the arts in 2020. The singer is also the recipient of the 2007 Pride of Maharashtra Award from his native state.
