About SURJ
In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail.
My earliest musical memories is making mixtapes from my parents’ CDs on car journeys, watching the English countryside pass by and imagining a quieter life somewhere beyond the window, music felt like a way of travelling somewhere I’d never been.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular?
Mumford & Sons, Wilder Mind
Tracy Chapman, Tracy Chapman
These albums, each hold a different version of me, they represent my past, present and future. These albums grab you to stay for the whole journey, every song is another chapter, a turn in the road, until you are different from where you began.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song.
“Still”
Still came from a season of learning how to remain when everything in me wanted to run, hope in the middle of uncertainty, and enough space in the music to find a little of your own story inside it.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far?
Touring with the Royal Academy of Music after lockdown. We stripped the songs back to hushed breaths and long silences, and after months of being apart, there was something almost sacred about hearing a room breathe between the notes.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band?
Play a room where everyone knows the words, the dream is less about its size but more about what happens inside. To keep making honest music that give people somewhere to place their own stories, and leave a little light behind when the music ends.
