Though they never quite broke through, the Action were one of the greatest bands of the mid-1960s British mod scene (sometimes more specifically dubbed “freakbeat”). Like their peers, they added a gritty, garage-rock edge to their American soul influences, and recorded numerous U.S. R&B tunes. Led by singer Reg King, they began in 1965, and after a run of unsuccessful singles, the personnel began shifting, and their sound started moving toward a psych-pop direction. Finally, in 1969, they transformed into the progressive-rock band Mighty Baby.
