A Romford-based band led by singer Dean Maverick, The Attractions were signed to EMI-Columbia in 1966. For reasons best known to the band and their producer, they devoted their two singles on the label to cover versions of songs by the Rolling Stones ("Stupid Girl") and The Kinks ("Party Line"), the latter produced by the Kinks' own Dave Davies, which weren't bad but also failed to set the charts on fire. The B-side of their second single, however, wa "She's A Girl," a prize piece of garage punk that featured a call-and-response structure on the vocals and guitar, and an almost American-style sneer in its attitude. The Attractions (who also billed themselves, at one point, as The Attraction) had nothing to do with the Elvis Costello band of that name. ~ Bruce Eder
