The Blood Brothers unleashed some of the most defiant and uncompromising music of the post-hardcore movement in the early 2000s. Vocalists Jordan Blilie and Johnny Whitney and drummer Mark Gajadhar started the band in 1997 in Seattle while they were still in high school, joined soon by bassist Morgan Henderson and guitarist Cody Votolato. After releasing a few 7-inches, they debuted in 2000 with This Adultery Is Ripe, which cemented their signature sound: an artsy melange of discordant guitar riffs, disjointed rhythms, and frenzied, slobbering vocal screams. The Blood Brothers’ 2003 breakout, the Ross Robinson-produced Burn, Piano Island, Burn, refined this sonic chaos into avant-garde noise. Subsequent albums incorporated more straightforward songs and prominent synths, culminating in Fugazi’s Guy Picciotto coproducing 2006’s propulsive, keyboard-forward Young Machetes. The Blood Brothers broke up shortly thereafter; the members branched out into other projects, including the post-punk band Jaguar Love and the hardcore act Head Wound City, before reuniting briefly in 2014 for shows.
