About The Broadway Quintet
Genre
Jazz
The Broadway Quintet was originally formed in 1962 as an extension of the United National Independence Party, led by Kenneth Kaunda, which took power in 1964. They were a party band, playing "mazungu" (White) music, or Western pop material, for audiences on the Lusaka hotel circuit. Their original membership was culled from various other hotel bands, such as the Rhokana Melodies, De Black Evening Follies, the Crooners, and the City Quads. They endured into the '80s, and under the leadership of keyboardist Tonny Maonde, they won Zambia's best band award in 1981. ~ Steve Huey
