About The Cinematic Orchestra
Since the collective formed in 1999, The Cinematic Orchestra has been driven by founder Jason Swinscoe's eagerness to delve deep into the vintage sounds that inspire him and then give them new life. A DJ and multi-instrumentalist from London, Swinscoe devised a fresh approach for his group's early releases by seamlessly combining samples of jazz recordings with performances he solicited from contemporary musicians. With its moody synthesis of jazz, soul, downtempo, and film music, The Cinematic Orchestra's 1999 debut album, Motion, established Swinscoe's flair for blending old and new. As The Cinematic Orchestra grew in scope—especially in its live incarnation—Swinscoe continued to strike a painstaking balance between compositions as dense and complex as the group's 2003 score for Dziga Vertov's silent-era classic Man With a Movie Camera and as starkly beautiful as 2007's "To Build a Home," which featured a spellbinding performance by Patrick Watson. Later collaborations with guests such as Moses Sumney and Roots Manuva on 2019's To Believe yielded equally dramatic results.
