Founded by Don Howland and Jeff Evans in the mid-to-late 1980s, the Gibson Bros. were forerunners of a sloppy, spirited blend of soulful blues riffage and punk attitude, cherry picking from rockabilly, country, and R&B along the way. The band released several crazed platters on the Homestead label, including THE MAN WHO LOVED COUCH DANCING, which marked the first appearance of Memphis drummer Ross Johnson as an honorary Gibson. The albums were a messy celebration of Howland and Evans's many influences, and placed the focus on heart and attitude over traditionally minded precision. The band's posthumous swan-song, MEMPHIS SOL TODAY! was recorded at Sun Studios and featured torchbearer Jon Spencer on guitar, organ, and vocals. Howland would go on to form the Bassholes, while Evans started the '68 Comeback.
