b. 22 May 1935, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. A well-tutored clarinettist, alto saxophonist and flautist, Logan studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. He played jazz in Boston and New York where his broad range allowed him to encompass R&B and free jazz and he was comfortable with musicians as diverse as Earl Bostic and Archie Shepp. In 1964 he appeared at Bill Dixon’s ‘October Revolution’ concerts. During this same period, the early 60s, he worked with several noted artists including Don Pullen, Milford Graves and Eddie Gomez, all of whom were members of his quartet for a well received 1964 recording session. Soon thereafter, however, health problems interfered with his career. His follow-up album was disappointing and very shortly he disappeared from sight. On the limited evidence of his recordings, Logan was an accomplished player with interesting ideas and it is unfortunate that his career was not allowed to develop.
