The Lumineers gave folk rock a refreshing makeover with a stripped-down, unplugged style full of foot stomps, handclaps, rolling piano riffs, and passionately strummed acoustic guitars. But despite their back-porch sound and their status as one of the biggest bands in folk rock and modern Americana, the band began not in some rustic backwater but in New York City. That’s where New Jersey natives Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites started playing their songs together as The Lumineers in 2005 after a few years of banging around with various names and styles. Things came fully into focus when singer/guitarist Schultz and multi-instrumentalist Fraites relocated to Denver in 2009, and they soon brought cellist/singer Neyla Pekarek aboard. The trio’s self-titled debut album appeared in 2012, and the single “Ho Hey” burst the dam, becoming a phenomenal success in a world with its appetite for acoustic music whetted by Mumford & Sons, and helping the album go multiplatinum. Intensifying the contrast between hummable tunes and forlorn lyrics that powered the first album, 2016’s No. 1 Cleopatra maintained the minimalism but still managed to lead The Lumineeers into sold-out arena shows. Pekarek split to go solo in 2018, but the two founding members reconfigured and solidified their vision, releasing III in 2019 and taking a batch of intensely personal, emotionally naked songs into the top tier of the Pop charts.
