Formed in New Orleans in the late 1960s, the Meters injected a potent dose of funk into the era's R&B. Propelled by Art Neville's infectious keyboard playing and Leo Nocentelli's tight guitar work, the quartet was held together by George Porter's fluid bass lines and Ziggy Modeliste's syncopated drumming. In addition to their own albums, the group recorded with Dr. John, Paul McCartney, Robert Palmer, and many others. Though the band members have pursued a variety of other outlets over the years (including the Neville Brothers), the Meters remain a venerable musical institution.
