He’s best known to Hindi film music fans as the composer behind passionate ballad “Barbaad”, from 2025 super-hit romantic drama Saiyaara. But The Rish, aka Rishabh Kant, began his career as vocalist of erstwhile experimental rockers Misplaced Anthems, before making waves as a Hindi pop singer-songwriter with a penchant for R&B. His adopted moniker is even a nod to The Weeknd, an artist who’s mastered the art of marrying those two genres. The Rish’s smooth, relatable tunes such as “Keh Do Na” and “Zaroorat” have made him a favoured guest vocalist, collaborating on tracks by acts as wide ranging as electronic music producer Pina Colada Blues, rapper Emiway Bantai, dance duo Sukriti and Prakriti Kakar, and film and pop composer QARAN—who got the Mumbai-based artist on board to croon on two tracks from the soundtrack to 2023 Bollywood film Thank You For Coming. Given his background, switching between styles is something that comes easily to The Rish—who says he “represents the genre of ‘emotion’”.
